2013 VW Golf GTi 'Concept' revealed

A concept in name only...

Volkswagen has released a few images of the 2013 VW Golf GTi Concept ahead of a press reveal in Paris later today. Though it’s fair to say that this is a concept in name only – even VW themselves state that the production model will be almost identical to this concept. The only detail we can see not making it to production is the feint red stripe continuing across the headlights from the grille.

Powering the iconic hot hatch is the same 2.0 litre TFSI turbo petrol engine with 220 bhp as per the current model, but Volkswagen will allegedly offer an optional performance package that will increase the output of the engine to 235 bhp. It has a peak torque of 258 lb/ft and promises to return 42.8 mpg.

The Mk7 GTi manages the 0-62 mph dash in 6.6 seconds and hits a top speed of 152 mph. Fitted with the performance package it does the sprint 0.1 quicker and reaches 155 mph.

Styling wise, the GTI concept gets a honeycomb grille with a red detail line as per previous GTi models, along with twin chrome exhaust pipes and LED taillights. Compared to the standard Golf Mk7, this hot version has been lowered by 15mm and comes with red brake calipers and a new design of alloy wheel in 18- or 19-inch sizes.

Inside we get the traditional tartan seat trim, along with extra red stitching for the leather on the steering wheel and gearstick. 6-Speed manual and DSG gearboxes will both be offered.
