Smart eScooter confirmed for production
Smart has confirmed today that it will be building a production version of the eScooter concept revealed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
Going on sale in early 2014, the production model will change a fair bit from the concept, but will share the same styling and features. These included an iPhone interface, LED lighting and helmets with built in headphones which link to the phone to play music and answer calls.
In a statement Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Cars, said "The decision in favour of the eScooter has been made. With this step, we are adding a further important component to our smart mobility concept for urban mobility in the future."
The eScooter concept featured a 48-volt lithium-ion battery which powered a 4 bhp electric wheel hub motor. This gave the eScooter a range of up to 62 miles at speeds up to 30 mph. obviously a scooter of this performance is only meant for the city, but that is where the eScooter is aimed. If Smart prices it correctly you can expect to see these cluttering up the streets silently in every major European city.
