BMW M6 GranCoupe revealed
BMW has officially unveiled the M6 GranCoupe ahead of the public debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
We may have joked about the concept in our tag-line – it’s a 4dr version of a coupe version(M6) of a 4dr (M5), but it doesn’t stop us from wanting it more. Subjectively it offers nothing more than the M5 – you get 4 seats instead of 5, there’s less rear headroom and it costs £25,000 more. But what you do get (other than a rather fancy carbon roof) is style, and lots of it.
So to make an M6 GranCoupe, you take the body of the GranCoupe, with its sleek roofline and pert rear and slap on the aggressive M6 front bumper, rear bumper with twin exhausts and the aforementioned carbon fibre roof panel which has a central lower aerodynamic section. There is also a new bonnet, revised grille and 20-inch alloy wheels. Add all that up and you have a truly stunning looking 4dr coupe. If we were in the market for an M5, we’d think really hard how much the rear seats would be used, as this is just so much better looking.
Interior changes are limited but the model is nicely equipped with Merino leather seats, an M steering wheel, illuminated sill plates and an Alcantara roof liner. Plus it’s just a much better styled interior than the M5.
Power is provided by the same twin-turbo 4.4 litre V8 from the M5 and M6 Coupe that produces 552 bhp and 502 lb/ft of torque. It is connected to a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission which enables the 0 – 62 mph dash to be dispatched in 4.2 seconds and means it can hit an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph or 189 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package. You don’t really buy an M-car with efficiency in mind, but the M6 GranCoupe averages 28.5 UK with CO2 emissions of 232 g/km.
Besides the meaty powerplant, the M6 is equipped with M-Sports suspension, revised steering and an Active M Differential. Customers can also order carbon-ceramic brakes which have "greater resistance to heat, lower weight and exceptional resistance to wear." Sadly, the M5 and M6’s ‘Sound Symposer’ is also carried over, which plays artificial engine noises into the car to give a sportier sound. BMW really should look to Jaguar and the XFR to see how a proper sports saloon should sound without using silly electronics.
The M6 GranCoupe will go on sale around April 2013, with a price close to £100,000.
