Porsche reveals the new 911 Carrera 4 & 4S

A 4WD system, wider hips and some new options for the 911...

Porsche has unveiled the 2013 911 Carrera 4 and 4S today ahead of schedule after the press shots leaked onto the web over the weekend. Aiming to add an extra dimension of usability to the new 911 (991) range, the new model will make the sports car more usable in inclement weather such as snow, rain and icy conditions.

The Carrera 4 & 4S are available in coupe and cabriolet versions, and come with Porsche’s new active AWD Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system – basically a four wheel drive transmission that links up with all the other systems available in the car to create the safest yet most playful Carrera 4 yet. The new system is split to a RWD bias in normal driving, but more power will be sent to the front wheels if slip is detected. The new 4 & 4S models are around 65kg lighter than the models they replace.

Engine lineup is the same as the two wheel drive models, which means the 348 bhp Carrera and the 397 bhp Carrera S, with a 430 bhp Powerkit available for the S.

Visually the 4WD models are distinguished by the new wider rear arches required for the new drivetrain, which are 22mm wider at either side. It certainly gives the 911 a more purposeful stance, though if you don’t notice the arches you’ll see the new red strip linking the rear lights. This has been used on the 4WD versions of the 911 back to the 996 variant, but this time it serves another purpose with the strip containing LED lights that come on with the rear lights.

Also new for the release of the 4 & 4S, but also available on the 2 & 2S models are a few new options. Firstly there is a new glass sunroof which gives a much airier feel to the cabin and looks great. Then there’s the addition of an adaptive cruise control system which uses radar to slow the car if it approaches another car while on cruise control. Finally there’s a little option for the sportier driver – when you order the Sport Chrono pack with the 7-speed manual gearbox the car will now blip the throttle to match engine revs on a downshift – a very cool feature and one we can’t wait to try out.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera with all-wheel drive will make its first public appearance at the 2012 Paris International Motor Show in September ahead of arriving in UK Porsche Centres towards the end of the year.

The Carrera 4 Coupe is priced from £77,924, and the Carrera 4S Coupe priced from £87,959. The 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet is priced from £86,583.00, and the Carrera 4S Cabriolet from £96,619.
